Facilitation and consulting
kiran revels in a box of beautifully sorted markers at the Highlander Center, 2019.

about kiran

I am a capacity builder; I make it easier for groups to work together through the hard stuff. Through my facilitation and consulting, I aim to fortify groups and organizations so that we may be more effective and joyful in creating a just and healing world.

With over two decades of social justice facilitation experience, I have worked with over 100 organizations and thousands of people, supporting them through courageous conversations, to transform their organizations so structures and practices are values-aligned, to vision their future, and to make plans to get there.

I started facilitating as a youth organizer at the age of 14. It wasn’t until I joined my first cooperative 4 years later that I learned facilitation was the word for what I had been doing! Today, my facilitation practice is informed by my organizing work, degrees in psychology and art, professional experience in education, experience working in and with cooperatives, my healing and spiritual practices, and my experience living as a queer, (invisibly) disabled, mixed race, brown skinned gender fluid person.

I use visuals to map information and maximize group effectiveness and apply research-based approaches to learning and change. I protect space for reflection, introspection, and integration. I use body-based practices to support learning and ease decision making, ensure we move at a realistic pace, and take breaks when needed. I ground my work in love, compassion, and a deep belief that just transformation is possible. I specialize in working with groups that are highly participatory, democratically managed and/or owned.

Currently I support groups in three areas:

  1. Spell casting/creating an organizational compass: vision, values, points of unity, purpose (sometimes called “mission”), goal setting, planning
  2. Building the skills and structures needed for democratic and participatory governance:
communication and conflict engagement skills, organizational structure refinement, decision making processes and skills, creating leader-full organizations, group nurturing and team building
  3. Training, skill building, and coaching for facilitators

I was a founding member and worker-owner of AORTA 8 years, and have served on the boards of 5 non-profits. I live in Ohlone land and call Huichin/Oakland home. A Virgo magician and nerd, I love growing and cooking food, play the guitar badly, and parent a luminous toddler.

Pangea Legal Services

Niloufar Khonsari

“Kiran zooms in on issues and the heart of what people say like a hummingbird zooms in on its nectar. She is one of the best listeners I have ever met, and her nearly two decades of experience in facilitation really shines through with every piece of feedback she provides.”

Inés Izquierda

“Sogorea Te’ Land Trust had a great experience working with kiran for our first annual strategic planning meetings. We appreciate how kiran integrated her skilled facilitation and knowledge of social justice movement building and collective processes with an array of tools and resources to support our organization in turning some of our dreams into specific goals with the steps we need to take to meet them.”

Immigrant Liberation Movement

Blanca Vasquez

“Kiran brings an almost magical trifecta of skills, experience, and intuition to all of her trainings.  She channels productivity no matter the situation – she has turned vague but enthusiastic passion into founding documents, and turned conflict into structured next steps.”
